Listening Tools
The web offers us lots of wonderful resources to lectures, radio programs, music, and much more. I've compiled a list of useful links for you to choose from. Same as in reading, it is advisable not to worry if you don’t understand every single word you encounter. Relax, enjoy the text you are listening to, and try to always get the main point of what is being said.
Quick Tip!
Schedule some time each week to practice listening in English. You can choose to watch a movie, a lecture or presentation online, or a news report. Then, try to journal about your listening exercise. Did you enjoy the topic? What was the main idea? Can you list some new things you learned? |
Resources Online
Ted Talks
This is one of my favorite pages. Browse through presentations given by people from all over the world. From inspiring to funny, you are bound to find something of interest here. You can also choose to watch these with subtitles in English, in which case you’ll practice your reading skills as well.
Voice of America
A website that provides news reports adjusted for English language learners to make them easier to be understood.
The RSA (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce)
Provides inspiring, highly academic, and intellectually stimulating lectures. Suscribe to their YouTube channel to get updates on new lectures being uploaded.
Elllo
A more basic website to practice listening through short conversations or interviews. All authentic text –it’s not actors speaking there. You’ll also get to hear people with different accents, both from English speaking countries and from other places in the world. Take one of the short quizzes on some of the activities to test your own listening comprehension.
American Rhetoric
Are you inspired by speeches? If so, this is the place for you. Find speeches from influential American figures as well as from movies.
Rachel’s English
Do you have a hard time hearing differences in sounds in American English? Here is a website for you to practice with a pronunciation teacher.
